Four New Directors for Cord Blood Association

2022 New CBA Directors

The Cord Blood Association has four new directors, elected at the CBA Board of Directors annual meeting:

Peter Bawin, MBA, Global Vice President, Commercial Life Sciences, CooperSurgical, Los Angeles, California, USA
Jonathan (Jon) Carmichael, PhD, Director Laboratory Services, Viacord, Hebron, Kentucky, USA
Ngaire Elwood, PhD, Director, BMDI Cord Blood Bank, and head of the Cord Blood Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Melbourne, Australia
Caridad (Cary) Martinez, MD, Associate Professor, and Chief, Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies, Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA


12 Candidates

The new directors were nominated from a field of 12 candidates recommended by members of the association.

They are succeeding four directors who are retiring from the board: David Blackett, MM, Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, PerkinElmer Viacord; Jaap Jan Boelens, MD, PhD, Chief of Service, Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Richard Jennings, former Chief Executive Officer, Cord Blood Registry; and Gesine Kögler, MD, Director, Jose Carreras Cord Blood Bank and GMP Facility, University of Düsseldorf Medical Center.

Officers Elected

The Board of Directors also elected the association’s officers for the coming year:

President – Joanne Kurtzberg, MD, Director, Carolinas Cord Blood Bank, Durham, North Carolina, USA (re-elected)
Vice President – Colleen Delaney, MD, MSc, Founder and Scientific Director, Deverra Therapeutics, Seattle, Washington, USA (re-elected)
Secretary – Beth Shaz, MD, Deputy Director, Marcus Center for Cellular Cures, Durham, North Carolina, USA
Treasurer – Marcie Finney, MS, MBA, Executive Director, Cleveland Cord Blood Center, Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Officers of the association are elected annually by the Board of Directors.
